REBUILDING LIVES AFTER THE TSUNAMI - Citizenship for Unrecognized Thais
 Thai families living in remote tsunami-affected areas receive free DNA tests in order to obtain national ID cards and gain access to their full rights as Thai citizens.
For Den Charnsamut, a fisherman whose children took part in T-LAC’s DNAtesting program to obtain ID cards, one of the key benefits is that his children can now exercise their rights as citizens of Thailand.
“With an ID card, we can vote in local and general elections. Without one, we can only think about who we’d like as our leader,” he says. “Thailand is a democracy and now we are able to take part in that.”

Often living in remote communities beyond the reach of government services, many Moken grow up illiterate. A grant from T-LAC ensures that this young boy can continue his studies and prepare for a better future. |

REBUILDING LIVES AFTER THE TSUNAMI - Profile Paralegal Volunteer: Ketsara
 A mother whose children were killed in the tsunami finds fulfillment working with The Asia Foundation’s legal aid center to help others whose lives were devastated by the disaster.
“The best thing T-LAC does is to spread knowledge,” says Ketsara, one of more than 40 female paralegal volunteers working for T-LAC. “I know so much more than I did before. Now I’m brave enough to ask questions in a legal setting. I feel as if I’ve been given a voice and been taught how to use it.”
